No laptop, no password: update your Crew HQ profile by email

You have just stepped off after a season, the CV on your phone has the new boat on it, and the last thing you want to do is hunt for a password on airport wifi. Send the file instead.

The moments when the website is the long way round

Everything on your profile can be edited on the site. Edit profile holds every field, the photo and the CV upload, and if you are sitting down with a laptop and a cup of coffee that is a fine way to do it.

The trouble is that crew rarely update anything at a desk. It happens in a crew mess between guest trips, in a taxi to the airport, or three months after the last dayworking job when you cannot remember which email address you signed up with. That is when the email route earns its keep: attach the CV, send it, carry on with your day.

Send it as a PDF or Word document, under 5 MB, to [email protected], from the email address your Crew HQ account uses. That last part matters. If it arrives from a different address it is treated as a new person rather than as an update to you.

What happens to the file you send

Crew HQ puts the CV on your profile in place of the old one, so captains and recruiters looking at you see the current version rather than last year's. The new file is always saved.

It then fills in the details that are missing from your profile using what is in the CV. Anything you had already written yourself is kept, so a tidy summary or a carefully worded line about your notice period does not get overwritten by the machine. Filling in details from a CV is free the first time; after that it is part of Premium and Professional membership.

You get an email back with a button that signs you in with no password. Press it and you are on your profile, logged in, able to check the result and correct anything that did not come across properly. That button is also the simplest answer to a forgotten password.

No account yet

The same address works if you have never registered. Email your CV to [email protected] and a free crew profile is built from it. It stays hidden until you press the button in the email Crew HQ sends back, so nothing of yours appears in crew search until you have looked at it and decided you are happy.

Crew HQ is not a crew agency. Captains and recruiters search crew and contact them directly, with no placement fee and no commission, which is why it pays to have the profile reading correctly rather than sitting half finished.

Do it now, before you unpack

Open your email, attach your most recent CV, send it to [email protected] from your own account address, and press the sign-in button when the reply arrives. Then add a reference if you have a new one; one completes a profile, two or three from different employers read better to a captain.
